Riding The Workington Shuttle

Riding The Workington Shuttle
[TC062]

Item Description
On 19th November 2009, the town of Workington was literally cut into two following severe flooding which destroyed or damaged six bridges over the River Derwent.

Remarkably the railway bridge survived and to help ease the situation, a new station was built in record time at Workington North, allowing local residents to get to and from Workington each day and avoid a lengthy detour by road.

On 30th November 2009 a loco-hauled shuttle service was introduced between Maryport and Workington using DRS class 37s, 47s and even 57s!

Starting and finishing each day at the Direct Rail Services depot at Carlisle Kingmoor this four-coach train, with a loco on each end, worked 12 return journeys between the flood-stricken towns each weekday until the end of May.

Filmed with the full assistance of DRS, this DVD takes a ride on the Workington Shuttle.

Starting at Kingmoor depot at first light, we travel in the cab of 47501 on the empty stock to Maryport.

From here the shuttle service begins and the journey is featured from both locos, with various lineside locations, on board the train and there’s a look at Workington North station, the various shunt moves at Workington itself, the stock used, passing freight trains, signals, signal boxes and so much more.

The journey ends with a cab ride from Maryport on the empty stock all the way back to Carlisle and on to Kingmoor depot in the cab of 37611.

Filmed in 16:9 widescreen on a number of fine sunny days in April 2010, see the Cumbrian coast at its very best with blue skies, yellow gorse, a loco hauled train and of course, lots of thrash!
